Mattel reveals the next MOTU Classics Quarterly Variant!

Mattel once again rewarded subscribers by sending them an e-mail revealing the next Quarterly Variant in the Masters of the Universe Classics toy line. I don’t think there’s really any need to keep it a secret, since it no doubt hit the web the second people started getting the e-mails, so there he is…Dragon Blaster Skeletor!

We’ve known for a week or so that this reveal would be coming soon, and many have been speculating that this would indeed be a Skeletor variant. Many rumors were pointing to either New Adventures Skeletor or Dragon Blaster Skeletor, the latter of which turned out to be correct.

He makes total sense for 2012. We already received Thunder Punch He-Man this year, and in the vintage line Dragon Blaster Skeletor was released alongside him. Also, this is a very heavily dragon themed year with Draego-Man already released and Granamyr coming later in the year. It’s kind of cool to add this version of Skelly to that group.

I think he looks great, and I’m excited to check him out in person. How about the rest of you? What do you think?

  • Juan says:

he looks cool! But i woud have preferred na skeletor!

  • The Rook says:

I LIKE THE NEW BOOTS WITH SCALES, BUT THE DRAGON'S HEAD IS A BIT OFF I THINK.

  • PAT says:

I love it ! The idea to get Whiplash's arms and Kobra Kahn's boots is awesome. This is an awesome variant. I'm already looking forward to watching your test Dan.

  • He-fan says:

the original was one of my favorites…. this reveal is rather upsetting.. I hate the teeth, they are totally over the top and the dragon just isn't scary enough… hopefully i'll warm up to it.

This was always one of my favorite figures as a kid, Can't wait to get this!

  • Platypusrex says:

Pretty cool, but I'm holding out for Terror Claws Skeletor. He was my one and only Skeletor as a kid.

  • Lex says:

Never had any of the Skeletor variants (apart from Disco) as it happens but this is the one that always caught my attention. I think it is the red, really seperates him from the other versions of old bone face. I look forward to picking him up.

This reveal completely made my day! So excited!!! The head looks a little too "comical" for my tastes but this was my favorite variant… I am in luff…

And with this, we are ONE STEP CLOSER to Tube Top Skeletor! Sweet!

I like this guy. Naturally, tooling and other costs prevent a fully articulated separate dragon from being a thing on a single figure, so I can't complain.

I think the head looks cool, even if I find it odd that the look doesn't seem to be based directly on a particular source.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, the shape of this guy's head is kind of similar to that of the Terror Claws Skeletor dragon skull weapon. I wonder if maybe they decided to merge the 2 accessories into a single creature that eventually dies but Skeletor loves him so much from their previous cuddle-time that he keeps the skull around to bash and bite people with. Probably not, but I guess we'll find out in a year or so. I'll be too distracted by tube tops to notice at that point.

  • Stink-E says:

arrrgggg…. the teeth on that dragon!! uhhhhggggg Just looks cartooney; it's not even proportunate.
That thing couldn't possibly open and close it's mouth, the back teeth are just as long as the fangs.
I'm shocked that the 4H didn't knock this one out of the park and give us a badd @$$ looking dragon head!! Bit of a let down to a personally highly anticipated fig.
Otherwise the armor, chain, and coloring look great. I think the swapped boots actually resemble the vintage figure than the ones on the stock Skeletor.

And how did Skeletor's forearms morph into that of a different species??

  • Burning Saber says:

I figured we would see this this year. Dragon Blaster was my favorite Skeletor variant so i'm super excited to see him revealed. I must say I am a little dissapointed though, something about him looks off. I might end up bying another regular Skeletor and give him the Dragon Blaster armor. I'm willing to bet we'll see Flying Fists He-man at SDCC.

  • Dean says:

Thats awesome! And DB Skeletor totally makes sense as the Next variant.

Can't wait to see more pics of the dragon, I'd like to see what he looks like from the front.

  • Frequincy says:

Looks good aside from the dragon's teeth. I never had him as a kid, so I'm glad to add him to my collection.

  • Stygian says:

Having never owned the original as a kid I can't speak to the accuracy of the dragon head (which appears to be vexing many), but personally I love it! "Real chain"… check, "missing action feature"… nothing new there, "vintage style padlock"… lovely. Guys, this figure rocks! My only change to the figure once he arrives will be to give him the alcala head (which Matty would do well to produce in greater quantities), otherwise he's fantastic!

  • I'm not loving the head of the dragon (like a few others, I guess), but I LOVE this reveal in general, not only because it's my favorite character, but because they mixed it up a bit with the different parts so that it's not just a straight Skelly buck. I'm also happy to get the open left hand. I know some people didn't like it, but all of my Skelly's are re-issues and I'd really like that open hand just to make him stand out a bit in my collection.

i wonder if Draego-Man's head would fit on that dragon?

  • I also just noticed that that armor seems to include the lower torso, as well, unlike other armors we've gotten thus far.

    I think it looks cool.

  • i LIKE THAT THEY'RE MIXING UP THE FOREARMS, SHIN GUARDS, AND FEET. bUT THAT DRAGON HEADSCULPT IS TERRIBLE. iT LOOKS NOTHING LIKE THE VINTAGE FIGURE AND NOTHING LIKE ANY OF THE OLD ARTWORK.

  • 2Collect says:

I like this reveal. I had the original figure and this one is a much desired update. Sure it is not perfect but it is a good update.
